Loan Periods and Checkout Limits

Book items can be checked out for 14 days. A/V and Reference materials have a shorter loan period. A maximum of 5 items can be checked out at any time to a borrower.

Overdue fines and lost item replacement costs

Items are to be returned to the library on or before the assigned due date. Overdue fines are charged at a rate of $0.25 per item per day (not including closed days), to a
maximum of $5.00 per item. An item that is overdue for 90 days will revert to “Lost”, and a replacement cost will be assigned to the borrower. Replacement costs vary depending on the item. If a lost item that has been paid for is found within the school year, reimbursement for the payment will be made.

Your Library Card

A Student ID/Library card should be presented each time items are checked out. Once an item is checked out to a borrower, it becomes their responsibility. Student ID/Library cards should not be lent to other borrowers. In order to access certain online databases available to HDSB borrowers from home, you will require the full barcode number shown on your Student ID/Library card. Please see your Library Staff for more information on accessible online databases.

My Account

To access “My Account” you will need your library barcode number. Click on the “My Account” tab at the top of the screen and enter the full 14-digit barcode number (found on your student ID card) into the Borrower Barcode # box – click the login button when done. Once you are logged in, your name will be displayed in the upper-right hand corner of the screen, along with a Logout button – be sure to click the Logout button when you have finished your session. The Account Overview screen shows items that are signed out, holds that might have been placed, and blocks or monies owing on your borrower record. Click on the “Items Out”, “Hold Requests” and “Blocks” links or subtabs for more information.

Renewing Library Items

You can renew items by logging into the “My Account” area of the HIP catalogue with your library barcode number. Select the “Items Out” subtab – items that are currently signed out to you will be listed. Click on the box to the left of the title you wish to renew. When the box has been checked, click on the “Renew” button – if the item can be renewed, a new due date will be assigned. If the item cannot be renewed, please see Library staff. If you need to borrow items longer than the 14 day loan period, please see the Library staff at your school. As long as other borrowers are not waiting to borrow them, items can be renewed. Please renew items before the assigned due date to avoid paying overdue fines.

Placing Holds

Holds can be placed on items that are owned by your library and that are currently signed out. To place a hold, log into “My Account”, then click on the “Search” tab. Search for the item you wish to place a hold on. Select the item and proceed to the “Item Information” screen. Click on the “Request Item” button and follow the on screen instructions. You will be notified by your Library staff when your hold is available for pickup.
