The Halton District School Board will recognize Children's Mental Health Week, May 1-7, 2017 with a range of activities offered at schools throughout Halton. These events will focus on mental health promotion and build an awareness and understanding of the importance of well-being. Staff and students will share practical strategies to enhance mental wellness. Schools are invited to share their activities via Twitter using #hdsbBeWell.
The key messages for students and staff members during Children's Mental Health Week include:
• Everyone has mental health; mental health is not mental illness
• Caring adults and educators are key to building the skills, attitudes and habits that promote student mental health
• Providing a caring, inclusive school experience that enhances connectedness improves academic achievement, resiliency and well-being
• Educators are the 'eyes', 'ears' and 'hearts' for students; be aware of signs and symptoms, and reach out for support
• Mental health is a shared responsibility – all have the ability to enhance each other's wellness
The week will culminate with the 4th annual Halton Run for Youth Mental Health on Saturday, May 13. It's a collaborative effort between Halton District School Board, Halton Catholic District School Board and Team UnBreakable. The event, held at Burlington's Spencer Smith Park (near Brant Street and Lakeshore Road) starting at 9 a.m., aims to unite students, families and staff to show their support for youth physical and mental health. Registration is open.
“Children's Mental Health Week is an important initiative as schools are uniquely positioned to build the knowledge, habits and skills that students need in order to feel mentally healthy and reach their full potential," said Mark Zonneveld, Superintendent of Education (Student Services).
