Halton District School Board students performed well during the 61st annual Bay Area Science and Engineering Fair (BASEF), which was held virtually in March and April due to public health restrictions.
As a result of the generous participation of dozens of sponsors and charitable donors, approximately $150,000 worth of cash prizes, awards and scholarships were given to students participating in BASEF 2021. In the HDSB, 42 students received awards for their submissions. Highlights include:
Primary Fluid Systems Pinnacle Best in Fair, International Science and Engineering Fair Award:
- Caroline Huang, Grade 10, Abbey Park High School, for her project, ‘’Predicting Mechanisms of Flood Vulnerability for Southeast Asia using Statistical Percolation Theory”.
Canada-Wide Science Fair Awards:
- Harini Karthik and Echo Chen, both Grade 11, Garth Webb Secondary School, for their project, ‘’Aerodynamic Performance and Structural Engineering of Helicopter Seeds for Wind Turbines (HeliSpin)”.
- Jeffrey Klinck, Grade 10, Oakville Trafalgar High School, for his project, “A Novel Innovation to Aid People with Deafness via Haptic Feedback Relative to Surroundings”.
- Sabrina Mogus, Grade 11, Garth Webb Secondary School, for her project, “ViQ: A Wearable Sonic Vibrotactile Stimulation and Cueing Device for Individuals with Parkinson’s”.
- Vihaan Vashishtha, Grade 7, W. H. Morden Public School, “Can we grow plants on Mars?”.
