GIVEN THE IMPORTANCE of mathematics to student education, the Halton District School Board will be hosting an interactive Math Symposium for parents and students from Kindergarten to Grade 6 on Saturday, April 30, 2016.
Held at Garth Webb Secondary School (2820 Westoak Trails Blvd, Oakville.) from 9 a.m.-12 p.m., this event will provide an opportunity for elementary parents to better understand how students are learning mathematics in the 21st century.
Terri Blackwell, Superintendent of Education for the Halton District School Board, will kick off the symposium with a keynote address titled, “Kids don’t know their facts!”. This will be followed by a series of three 30-minute interactive breakout sessions for parents and students where they will experience math learning.
“Parent engagement is a critical focus for our board,” Blackwell said. “We know our parents play an important role in their child’s attitude toward, and success with, mathematics.”
There will be 14 sessions addressing topics such as DreamBox, Growth Mindsets in Math, Number Talks and Mental Math, How to Support Your Child Learn Math, Math in Kindergarten, and more.
