NEW: Students completing credits through institutions external to the Halton District School Board must complete the
External Credit Declaration Form and submit it to their Guidance office upon registration with the external course provider.
For Students Entering Grade 9 in September 2023 or Earlier:
The
Ministry of Education requires the following items to be completed to successfully obtain a high school diploma.
- 18 compulsory credits
- 12 optional credits
- 40 hours of
community involvement activities
- Ontario Secondary School Literacy test (OSSLT) written in Grade 10 or the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Course.
- 2 eLearning courses successfully completed (opt out form available)
The secondary school program is designed so that the diploma requirements can be met within 4 years following Grade 8.
For Students Entering Grade 9 in September 2024 or Later:
The Ministry of Education requires the following items to be completed to successfully obtain a high school diploma.
- 17 compulsory credits
- 13 optional credits
- 40 hours of community involvement activities
- Ontario Secondary School Literacy test (OSSLT) written in Grade 10 or the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Course.
- 2 eLearning courses successfully completed (opt out form available)

Community Involvement Hours
To document volunteer hours students should request a letter from the organization where they volunteer. The letter should list the type of work, the number of hours and the contact name. See community involvement hours for more information
