French Immersion Program Considerations
- Open to students starting in Grade 2.
- 100% French instruction in Grade 2 intended to develop proficiency, giving students more instructional time in French.
- Many students that enter the program continue throughout elementary and into secondary, while some opt out.
- By the end of Grade 8, students who begin French Immersion in Grade 2 will receive 4,085 hours of instruction in French. A minimum of 3,800 hours is required for admission into the Grade 9 French Immersion program.
Core French
Elementary
- All students receive Core French instruction at 40 minutes per week in Grade 1
- Students who do not enrol into the French Immersion program will receive 40 minutes per week of French Instruction in Grades 2 and 3
- Grade 4-8 students receive 120-200 minutes of French Instruction per week
Secondary
- One mandatory French credit
- Core French is offered for each Grade level through secondary
- Option for DELF exam in Grade 12
French Immersion
Elementary
- Entry point is Grade 2
- Gr. 2- all subjects are taught in French
- Gr. 3- all subjects but English Language Arts are taught in French
- Gr. 4-8- French Language Arts, Science,Social Studies or History/Geography (or any combination of the remaining subjects to ensure that students have French language instruction for 50% of their program)
Secondary
- 10 secondary credits (4 French Language Arts / 6 content courses)
- Option for DELF exam in Grade 12
