E.J. James Public School's First Lego League Robotics Team, comprised of Grade 6 and 7 students called the
Yee-Bots, have tackled an important subject matter: eliminating
shark finning.
Celebrities like former NBAer Yao Ming and Chef Gordon Ramsay have voiced opposition to the practice, which involves removing shark fins at sea.
Through their Lego team, the Yee-Bots outlined a proposal to address this issue and participated in a FLL competition on December 10, competing against 23 teams. They received the Shark Finn Project Presentation award.
The Lego Robotics FIRST league FLL objective is to make children enthusiastic about science and technology; to equip the participants with the idea of team spirit; and to encourage students to solve complex tasks in a creative way
The
Narhwals team created a wildlife sightings website and mobile app. People can see where wildlife has been reported in their area and they can also upload sightings themselves. The intent is to reduce contact between people and wildlife, with the goal of reducing habituation of animals to people.
See below the groups present their topics.
