The Halton District School Board joins school boards across Ontario in celebrating Education Week from May 1-5, 2023. This year’s theme from the Ministry of Education is,
Education for a Brighter Future. This year, the
HDSB is celebrating Education Week by focusing each day on one of the five areas of focus in the
2020-2024 Multi-Year Plan (MYP) to show the importance of schools, staff, families and the community working together to support the well-being and success of students.
The MYP is a strategic plan created collaboratively for the HDSB. The purpose of the MYP sets direction and prioritizes the collective actions of all stakeholders to ensure efforts of the HDSB are aligned to support the Board’s more than 65,000 students, 9,000 staff and the broader community.
On the final day of Education Week, the HDSB will highlight the many learning opportunities for students and staff that help promote knowledge and understanding of Indigenous perspectives and realities. The Indigenous Perspectives & Awareness area of the MYP demonstrates the HDSB’s commitment to expanding knowledge and understanding of Indigenous perspectives and realities:
Today, the HDSB recognizes the National Day of Awareness for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls (May 5). The Final Report of the National Inquiry into MMIWG2S delivers 231 individual Calls for Justice. As outlined in Section 11.1, "...education and awareness must include historical and current truths about the genocide against Indigenous Peoples through state laws, policies, and colonial practices” (p. 193).
