Each year, one hundred
Schulich Leader Scholarships are awarded to entrepreneurial-minded secondary school graduates enrolling in a Science, Technology, Engineering or Math program at 20 partner universities across Canada.
This year’s recipients from the Halton District School Board are:
- Evie Bouganim, a Grade 12 student at Oakville Trafalgar High School
- Ella Chow, a Grade 12 student at Milton District High School
- Caroline Huang, a Grade 12 student at Abbey Park High School
- Manasva Katyal, a Grade 12 student at White Oaks Secondary School
The scholarships total $440,000 to study Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) in their post-secondary education. Each excelling in their own unique way, Bouganim, Chow, Huang, and Katyal embody the Learning and Achievement area of focus of the HDSB’s
2020-2024 Multi-Year Strategic Plan.

Evie BouganimEnrolled in Mechatronics Engineering this fall at the University of Waterloo, Evie aspires to work in the field of robotics and automation.
“I am extremely grateful and honoured to be a recipient of the Schulich Leader Scholarship. I’m thankful for my family, friends, teachers, and robotics team for continually fueling my passion for STEM and leadership,” says Evie. “This incredible opportunity enables me to focus on my studies and pursue my dream of innovating for positive change in the world.”
“The OTHS students and faculty are immensely proud of Evie's achievement. Her hard work, and unwavering determination are an inspiration to others,” says Steve Oliver, Principal at Oakville Trafalgar High School. “We have no doubt that her future endeavors will be equally remarkable and we wish her every success in the future.”
Ella ChowEnrolled this fall at McMaster University, Ella strives for an innovative career in the field of biomedical engineering and technology.
"Being awarded the Schulich Leader Scholarship is really a dream come true. I am so grateful for the resources this award provides and the doors it opens for me," she says. "I want to express how appreciative I am of my teachers, family, and friends for supporting me throughout my academic journey, and I am so excited to explore the opportunities that come with being a Schulich Leader throughout my post-secondary education."

She always puts forth 110% effort in everything that she does, she strives for the best and beyond. She is respected by her peers and puts others before herself. We can't wait to see what the future holds for Ella.”
Caroline Huang Excited to continue learning at the University of Waterloo this fall, Caroline plans to explore new avenues in research and entrepreneurship.
“I am extremely grateful that opportunities such as the Schulich Leader Scholarship celebrate the ambition of young people with incredible resources to further their success,” says Caroline. “Learning more about the accomplishments of other leaders reminds me why STEM is such an exciting space to be in. Most of all, I am thankful for the support system of friends, teachers, and communities who motivate and challenge me.”

Manasva KatyalEnrolled this fall at the University of Waterloo, Manasva is eager to learn and contribute towards new and emerging technologies.
"I am incredibly grateful to my mentors and peers who have supported me throughout my journey thus far,” says Manasva. Being awarded the Schulich Leader Scholarship is a tremendous honour, alleviating significant financial stress during my undergraduate years. This opportunity opens doors to various avenues, and I am determined to use them to their fullest potential."
“The White Oaks school community is so proud of Manasva and all of his accomplishments including the Schulich Leader Scholarship,” says Christy Peterson, Principal at White Oaks Secondary School. “He is a strong and kind student who excels not only in academics, but also in Air Cadets as a Warrant Officer 2nd Class, and as a DECA member as a finance trainer. Manasva is also the current president of the computer science competitive team here at White Oaks. We wish Manasva all of the best next year at Waterloo. Congratulations Manasva!”
