June 6, 2024 - At the June 5, 2024 Board meeting, Halton District School Board Trustees selected Cedar Ridge Public School as the name for the new Milton elementary school (previously referred to as Milton SW #12 ps), located at 815 Kennedy Circle West in southwest Milton.
The name Cedar Ridge recognizes the ancient cedars that grow from the rock along the escarpment ridge at nearby Rattlesnake Point Conservation Area. These ancient cedars are more than 800 years old and highlight the importance of protecting and caring for nature. The name Cedar Ridge honours the preservation of local, ancient flora.
“Trustees of the HDSB recognize the significance of naming a new school and the impact it will have to inspire students to strive for excellence,” says Amy Collard, Chair of the Halton District School Board. “The selection of Cedar Ridge as the name for this new school recognizes the geography and local environment in the Milton community, and will foster a deep appreciation for environmental stewardship and leadership - an area of focus of the
HDSB Multi-Year Plan.”
Milton students, families and community members submitted suggestions for the name of the new school earlier this year. In total 1,044 names were submitted, with approximately 802 unique names received. A shortlist of names was developed by a committee that included parent, student and community representatives, Trustees and staff.
The school, which is currently under construction, is scheduled to open in September 2024 and will accommodate more than 750 students from Kindergarten to Grade 8. The three-story accessible school will feature 21st century teaching layouts, air conditioning with individual classroom controls, double gym, bus lay-by and student drop-off area. It also has five childcare rooms which will accommodate 88 students.
