The need for additional bus drivers has resulted in delays and a few cancellations, and we invite interested individuals to submit their applications
Halton Student Transportation Services (HSTS) advises there is a necessity for additional school bus drivers in select areas of the Halton Region.
Halton Student Transportation Services has been collaborating with the bus companies to minimize the disruptions on students and their families. Parents/guardians are encouraged to sign up for delays and cancellation notifications on the HSTS website (haltonbus.ca). A daily list of bus delays can be found on the HSTS website. While the average reported run delay has been 15 minutes, a few entire route cancellations have occurred due to periodic upswings in illness. About 40% of delays have been attributed to a need for more drivers.
Supply drivers will continue to assist in covering bus routes and permanent drivers have been working extra time to ensure students are safely transported to and from school.
According to David Colley, General Manager of Halton Student Transportation Services, local bus companies have been contracted to operate 456 bus routes for the 2024-25 school year. Bus companies are reporting a complement of 470 permanent and substitute professional drivers. To guarantee sufficient coverage in the event of driver absences stemming from sickness, vacations, or family emergencies, an extra 35 bus drivers are needed.
“We are aware of the impact this may have on some families and we appreciate their patience and understanding during this time,” adds Colley.
Bus companies continue to actively recruit bus drivers. HSTS is assisting in this effort by advertising jobs on the HSTS website.
