Ethel Gardiner Public School in Halton Hills took part in
The Blanket Exercise, a simulation of what the first peoples on Turtle Island, what we call North America, experienced during first contact with European Settlers.
During this learning activity, truths are read out loud by a facilitator, and items including blankets are removed from participants to represent losses and injustices occurring over time. Focus is also paid to the past and present leadership within Indigenous communities demonstrating strength and resiliency.
Participation in this simulation is part of HDSB's commitment to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission's calls to action for education on a path toward understanding the true history that we share as Treaty People.
Support has been provided from Canada 150 to engage in board-wide learning about Truth and Reconciliation.
