​The Halton District School Board is pleased to announce secondary school students Muqtasid Mansoor and Dasha Metropolitansky​ as the Board’s Student Trustees for the 2017-18 school year. Both students were successful in their bid to be elected to the role at the Student Senate meeting in late April.

 

Mansoor, a Grade 11 student at Milton District High School, was elected while Metropolitansky, a Grade 11 student at White Oaks Secondary School, was re-elected by the Student Senate. Student Trustee Zaid Haj Ali introduced Mansoor to the Board of Trustees at the May 3 Board meeting. As a current Student Trustee, Haj Ali’s term ends July 31, 2017; the incoming student trustees’ term of office officially begins on August 1, 2017.

 

“I am extremely humbled and honoured to serve the students of the Halton District School Board,” said Mansoor. “I wanted to be a student trustee because I’ve always been very passionate about being a voice for students. I see this as an opportunity to pursue that passion and at the same time give back to the Halton community by representing more than 60,000 students. I will strive to bring forth the collective student perspective on all issues that impact students and their learning.”

 

“After having been a Student Trustee for a year, I’ve learned the Board really cares about addressing the concerns of students,” explained Metropolitansky. “I have been fortunate to work alongside young leaders who are passionate about making their school communities better. The Student Trustee position is an incredible opportunity to represent these students at the Board level and to provide them with the knowledge and resources that will empower them to make a difference.”

 

As a Student Trustee, Mansoor said his goals include increasing the profile of the Student Trustee position and encouraging more students to get involved in the decision-making process. For Metropolitansky, her goals include increasing the representation of students on existing Board committees and projects, and working to have an online student election process that can be streamed in all schools.

 

In recognizing the results of the Student Trustee election, Trustees of the Halton District School Board welcomed Mansoor and Metropolitansky to their roles as Student Trustees for the 2017-18 school year.

“Trustees congratulate Dasha on her re-election and Muqtasid on his election as Student Trustees, and we look forward to working with both of  them,” said Kelly Amos, Chair of the Halton District School Board. “Dasha has been a very active participant, making use of Student Senate as a tool for learning and dialogue with Student Ambassadors in Halton. We welcome Muqtasid and know he will bring a continued focus on student voice as well. They will ensure students are well represented at the Board table.”
