The Halton District School Board is pleased to announce secondary school students Vanditha Widyalankara and Kacy Bao as the Board’s Student Trustees for the 2021-2022 school year. Both students were successful in their bid to be elected to the role at the Student Senate meeting last night (Feb. 25) through an online election, which saw more than 3,000 students vote, a record number for the HDSB.
Widyalankara, who attends White Oaks Secondary School, is currently a Student Trustee and was re-elected to the role. Bao, a student at Milton District High School, was newly elected. The new term of office officially begins on Aug. 1, 2021.
“I am beyond excited and thrilled to have the honour of being one of two HDSB Student Trustees for the upcoming school year and working alongside returning Trustee Vanditha Widyalankara,” Bao says. “I thank everyone for putting their faith in me, and I can’t wait for what our next school year has in store."
“Connecting with my peers across the HDSB as a Student Trustee this year has been the highlight of my student career,” says Widyalankara. “I am deeply honoured to have been re-elected and be given the opportunity to continue advocating for students for another year."
In recognizing the results of the Student Trustee election, Trustees of the Halton District School Board welcomed Widyalankara and Bao to their roles as Student Trustees for the 2021-2022 school year.
“The Trustees of the Halton District School Board look forward to continuing to work with re-elected Trustee Vanditha Widyalankara and welcome Trustee-elect Kacy Bao to the table for the new school year,” says Chair Andréa Grebenc. “Student Trustees provide valuable perspective at the board table in policy making for the Halton District School Board. They are leaders within the system acting as a conduit for student voice through Student Senate and the Halton Youth Leadership Symposium.”
