What is meant by “direction of school support”?
The term "school support direction" (or designation) involves selecting a school board that aligns with your educational preferences. In Ontario, every property owner must allocate support to a school board, regardless of whether they have children or if their children are presently enrolled in school. Residents also have the option to choose a school board for support.
What is the purpose of direction of school support?
The Municipal Property Assessment Corporation (MPAC) gathers data on school support, distributing it to each school board and municipality. This information serves various purposes:
- The selection of a school board for support influences the allocation of trustees to that board based on the number of supporters.
- Your chosen school board determines the trustees you will vote for in municipal elections.
- School boards and municipalities utilize the school support data for planning purposes, such as population projections and ward boundary planning.
How do I find out which school board I am currently supporting?
To identify the school board you currently support, examine your Property Assessment Notice issued by MPAC. If you don't have a copy of the notice, you can request it through the
AboutMyProperty portal on the MPAC website.
How do I update my school support information?
As of Jan. 1, 2024, MPAC is no longer responsible for collecting voter information for local elections. MPAC remains responsible for collecting information about school support. To update your school support information, visit MPAC's
