Get Involved - Parent Involvement Committee
In Ontario’s education system, all partners acknowledge the positive impact of parent engagement on student achievement. Students are supported and inspired to learn in a culture of high expectations in which parents:
-
are welcomed, respected and valued by the school community as partners in their child’s learning and development
-
have choices about how to be involved in the educational community to support student success
-
are engaged through ongoing communication and dialogue with other educational partners to support a positive learning environment at home and at school
-
are supported with the information and tools necessary to participate in school life
Parent Engagement Includes
-
providing a positive learning environment at home, actively working with children to support what they are learning in school and making learning an important part of the day
-
having conversations with teachers so that there is clear communication between the school and the home
-
becoming involved in school activities and volunteering to help with school events, trips and other activities
-
participating in a school council at the school level and parent involvement committee (PIC) at the school board level, to provide perspective
A Parent Involvement Committee (PIC) is an important advisory body to school boards. It is a board-level committee led by parents that provides parents with a direct link to their school board. A PIC is a formal structure and a key vehicle at the board level that enhances parent involvement and supports student achievement and well-being by:
- providing information and advice on parent engagement to the board,
- communicating with and supporting school councils, and
- undertaking activities to help parents support their children’s learning at home and at school.
The Halton District School Board’s recognizes parents/guardians play a vital role in the development and education of their children and in the success of schools and therefore provides a regular opportunity to network, share ideas, offer input and enjoy informative presentations on a number of education related topics throughout the school year. Unlike School Councils, which are school-based structures, PICs focus on things that affect more than one school and link parents with the school board’s director of education and trustees. Further details pertaining to the membership and activities of the PIC Committee can be found in the PIC Terms of Reference and Bylaws. Parent members selected for this committee serve a one or two year term and recruitment for new members for this committee take place each fall.
PIC Terms of Reference and Bylaws
Each School Council should assign one or two parent members to volunteer as a school-based PIC representative. These individuals are not part of the HDSB Parent Involvement Committee, but do act as a liaison between the board-school-parent community, actively promoting parent engagement within their school and positively promoting home and school partnerships. They also receive information and support from the Parent Involvement Committee to support parent engagement within their school and support to access PROgrants, which offer funding to schools to support parent learning and engagement.
