Burlington PAR Implementation Update #8 - May 2019

On Friday, June 14 M.M. Robinson staff and students will celebrate the school community with their “inaugural” Ram Revue. This school wide event will exhibit staff/student talent, academic achievement and school year highlights. This tradition began at Lester B. Pearson High School. The Ram Revue highlights the efforts by M.M. Robinson to build and honour shared school traditions.

Also highlighting the first year of amalgamation is The United Project vid​eo. Students and staff share the benefits of working together, inclusive of all student programs and pathways.  ​​

Construction Updates

To ensure that school communities are provided ongoing communication, construction updates for Nelson and M.M. Robinson will continue to be sent directly to school communities and will also be posted under “Updates” at www.hdsb.ca (search “PAR Implementation).

The Halton District School Board’s Facilities department has created a School Construction ​​Projects webpage​ for progress regarding school construction projects within the Board. 

​International Baccalaureate (IB)

This year Jennifer Bright, the IB Coordinator at Burlington Central and Robert Bateman High Schools, has worked with the administration and staff of both schools to:

• establish the Accelerated Learning Program (ALP) at BCHS,
• provide ongoing communication regarding the program, and
• promote the program within Burlington (e.g., information events, website).

In September 2019, Burlington Central High School will welcome 60+ students into the Grade 9 Accelerated Learning Program. The enrolment numbers to date indicate a continued viable program (see table below).​​​

During the 2019-2020 school year, there will be a focus on:

• continuing to grow the ALP at Burlington Central,
• bringing Burlington Central and Robert Bateman IB students and staff together, and
• transition of the IB program.​

Note: Effective September 2020, the International Baccalaureate program site will be Burlington Central High School.

Nelson and Robert Bateman

Students and staff at Nelson and Robert Bateman High Schools continue to create opportunities to work together. Spring 2019 highlights are provided below:

• April 24 - 75 Students from Nelson HS joined Robert Bateman students for a Wellness Conference hosted at Robert Bateman HS.​
  
• May 1 - Culture Cuisine Restaurant Gala was hosted by Bateman students in the school’s Pangea restaurant. Invitees included parents and guests (including Nelson staff).
• May 6 - Students from Robert Bateman and Nelson helped with the painting of a mural at Nelson HS as part of Mental Health Week.
• May 10 - Nelson’s Inside Ride (raising $24 K for cancer research) welcomed participating teams from Robert Bateman HS. This team is comprised of students in the Community Pathways Program, who have been working with the Nelson Grade 12 Leadership class throughout this semester.
  
  
  

While the formal integration committees will not be established until October 2019, School Councils at Burlington Central, Nelson and Robert Bateman have welcomed each other to their school council meetings throughout this year.​
