The Work Pathway

Many careers require a secondary school diploma for direct entry. These opportunities usually include specific on-the-job training after you start.

Employment options exist in many economic sectors including arts and culture, construction, business, health and wellness, hospitality and tourism, manufacturing, agriculture, landscaping and more. The HDSB offers several Pathways Programs that support direct student entry to the workforce. Some students who choose this pathway may later pursue apprenticeship, college and/or university. Several programs in Halton provide opportunities for students to meet initial requirements for entering specific industries, allowing them to make a successful transition from school to the workplace.

Post-Secondary Destination: Workplace

For all pathways, the workplace is the ultimate goal and destination. This video outlines the workplace opportunities available directly after high school, considerations for individual pathway planning and next steps for students in their employment search.

The workplace pathway may be a great fit for students who:

Have developed practical workplace skills that have prepared you for a specific career without needing to pursue college, university or an apprenticeship first;
Have been successful in workplace pathway courses and wish to explore workplace opportunities;
Want to gain workplace experience before continuing post-secondary education; and
Have specific career goals in mind that allow you to go directly to the workplace for on-the-job training.

Program Requirements

Many careers and places of work require students to have earned their Ontario Secondary School Diploma to be hired. These jobs usually include specific on-the-job training after you start.
When determining what to do, consider your goals, your skills and interests, your education and when you are available to work. Make sure you research information on the labour market and future opportunities for growth.
Apply for a SIN (Social Insurance Number) from the Government of Canada.

Program Duration

Each place of work will have specific training and/or probationary time periods to ensure the employment contract you signed is being upheld.

Research and Application Process

Talk to your Guidance Counsellor and meet with co-operative education teachers to discuss how to seek out rewarding employment opportunities in your community.
The Halton Industry Education Council (HIEC) provides assistance in job preparation, job seeking and career planning.
The Employer Registry , developed by HIEC, is one of the many useful tools to connect employers with prospective employees.
Consider a Pathways Program including SHSM, OYAP and Dual Credit by ex ploring Halton Pathways.

Better Jobs Ontario provides opportunities for students on Social Assistance, including Ontario Works and Ontario Disabilities Support Program.
Explore employment programs and opportunities available through the Halton Industry Education Council, YMCA Career Services or Goodwill Employment Services.

Pursue additional learning and training opportunities with your employer and/or furthering your education via apprenticeship training, a college program and/or university program.
