Welcome to the HDSB Guide To Post-Secondary! The transition from secondary school to post-secondary is a significant journey and one that is both exciting and potentially overwhelming at the same time!
With so many options to consider, it’s natural to feel some nerves as you explore your options and map out a pathway and plan that is right for you. This guide has been created by HDSB Guidance Counsellors to consolidate key information into one comprehensive resource to help students and their families make the most informed decisions at every step of the post-secondary planning journey.
The post-secondary pathway a student chooses marks a significant transition in their life. It is important for every HDSB student to consider all of their options and ensure they are supported throughout the process with helpful information, resources, opportunities and guidance by those who have their best interests in mind. Decisions should be fluid and students should keep an open mind to the many pathways and opportunities available.
Once students have explored their strengths, interests and skills, had the chance to experience academic, co-curricular, volunteer and employment opportunities, and are equipped with the information and ongoing support they need to make informed decisions and set meaningful goals, they will be prepared to successfully transition to their first post-secondary destination.
How to Use the HDSB Post-Secondary Guide

Keep in mind that the journey through secondary school is different for each and every student and your pathway may look and feel different from others. As you gather information, remember that you can reach out to school staff that support your pathway planning (Guidance, Student Success, Special Education and English as a Second Language teachers, etc.) to discuss and understand the information you have found and for support in your decision making.
Helpful Suggestions
- Plan with long-term goals in mind - what career area are you looking to pursue? What steps do you need to take in terms of post-secondary education or training to get to that career?
- Look at all of your options including programs and pathways at different institutions and publicly funded colleges and universities, private institutions and trade unions.
- Explore how you might choose to combine post-secondary destinations to get to the future you want. For example, are there collaborative or transfer programs between colleges and universities that will provide you with an exciting path to your goals?
- Consider the financial implications of your pathway planning decisions - what is the cost of your plan? Consider tuition, living costs, food, transportation and the many other costs that quickly add up. What’s your plan to manage these costs associated with your post-secondary education?
- Research supports that you can access as an apprentice, college or university student, or member of the workforce. These may include special education, English as a second language, well-being or other supports that will nurture your success after secondary school.
- Investigate programs for equity-deserving populations. Post-secondary institutions provide specific supports for under-represented students, helping them apply to programs and overcome systemic barriers.
- What questions do you still have? Who can you go to with these questions, both within your school community and also those affiliated with post-secondary opportunities of interest?
